The Southern Maritime Training Institute (SMTI) is a leading private maritime training institution in Sri Lanka, dedicated to producing competent, disciplined, and globally employable seafarers. Our mission is to provide high-quality, STCW compliant training that meets both national standards and international maritime industry requirements.

At SMTI we ensure that our Training Programs fully comply with the standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping ( STCW ) Convention, 1978 as amended as mandate by the Director General of Merchant Shipping ( Sri Lankan Maritime Administration).

SMTI offers comprehensive pre-sea courses and career enhancement courses for Navigation & Engineering Officers as well as for Ratings of both disciplines. Our facilities including simulators, workshops, and safety training labs combined with our experienced faculty of maritime professionals who possess both seagoing and instructional expertise, ensure that training is not only theoretically sound but also practically relevant.

Our scope encompasses the provision of maritime education, training, assessment & issuance of certificates, in line with applicable maritime standards and industry requirements.

SMTI’s governance is guided by a board comprising Master Mariners, industry professionals and maritime training experts. Their extensive seagoing and management experience ensures that SMTI maintains academic integrity, regulatory compliance, and strong industry relevance across all programmes.
